What's Anthology?
Iowa’s Cross-MFA Reading Series, Now With a Community-Forward Twist
Before the pandemic, Anthology was a reading series showcasing work by writers from across the University of Iowa’s renowned MFA programs, including fiction, poetry, nonfiction, translation, playwriting, Spanish creative writing, and book arts.
After six years of hiatus, we’re bringing Anthology back, now with the goal of bridging Iowa City’s MFA and resident communities and using the arts to make a difference.
On Sunday, May 3rd, 2026, we’re organizing a daylong literary festival at Public Space One’s Close House space (538 S. Gilbert St.), offering readings, workshops, games, a bake sale, and live music, plus appearances from local organizations including FilmScene.
Our event is in partnership with the local immigrant rights organization Escucha mi Voz. While there’s no cost to attend any of our events on May 3rd, guests can donate money at the door (suggested donation $15).
Anthology Reading Series: Since 2008
Started by Cutter Wood (NWP) and Geoff Hilsabeck (IWW, Poetry) in 2008, the Anthology Reading Series has featured some of Iowa’s most celebrated recent graduates. Over the years, the event has taken many forms, from readings at backyard barbecues to the Englert Theater. Anthology’s other hosts have included Bluebird Diner, Prairie Lights, Beadology, the Graduate Painting Studios, Trumpet Blossom Café, and this year’s home, PS1.
